My First Trip In A VW Split Screen
After my first trip in a 1967 Split Screen Camper, i soon realised what a cult following and people stopping power these vehicles hold.
I’ll admit that when i was younger i thought they were cool, but i soon swapped to a Ford fan so If I had a surplus amount of money then you wouldn’t catch me down at my local Audi garage, i’d be trawling through ebay for an old MKII Ford Escort, that’s my sort of vehicle.
There’s lots of little things that you take for granted in a modern car such, as a windscreen wash wipe having a pump and not having to pump it by hand, and having ABS and disc brakes all round and having a reasonable stopping distance, original spec for a 67 Split Screen was drums all round so your already thinking about breaking way before you would even contemplate it in a new car.
On my little trip today it was interesting to see how parents would stop with their kids to point at the camper and even older people would have a sly look. It’s not often now that you would point out a car now to younger children, Porsches are so common there like minis you see them everywhere, its only more exotic cars such as Ferrari’s Lamborghini’s and Maserati’s that tend to get this attention.
